Student Support

The Ottawa Flight College is intent on supporting our students by providing ways to increase the value of their training.

The Ottawa Flight College is intent on supporting our students and we provide a number of ways to increase the value of their training.

Value Pricing and Discounts

As a non-profit organization, we have a mandate to teach pilots to fly and support general aviation.  While we must run a profitable and sustainable business, making a large profit is not our primary motive.  We want you to learn to fly first and above all.  We realize that flying is expensive so we do everything in our power to cut costs and keep the prices low.

In addition to the low prices, we provide block discounts that will save you between 2 and 4% of the cost of flying.  We also, from time to time, may discount aircraft rentals during slow periods to encourage you to spread the flying out over the day.  Try to take advantage of these discounts to save yourself money.

Learning Opportunities

During your training, there are a number of low-cost learning opportunities which we encourage you to take.  For example, sitting in the back seat during another student's training flight is a great way to observer and learn without the pressure of being the pilot in command.  You can rent our simulator for solo practice.  The Ottawa Flying Club also offers a number of low-cost seminars in areas that will be of interest to you.

One of the best learning opportunities we offer are the long cross-country trips the Ottawa Flying Club makes across North America.  These trips are a great way to put your training to use and build confidence.

Personal Scheduling Service

To help you stay on track, the Ottawa Flight College will provide you with a scheduling service that will make aircraft and instructor bookings for you.  For a full time student trying to juggle classes and flight training, this personalized booking service make your life much simpler and helps keep your training on track.  For part-time students, the booking service will help find aircraft and instructors at times that meet your schedule.

Fleet Quality and Standards

You are paying a lot for flight training and we try to ensure you have solid dependable aircraft to fly.  We may skimp on the cosmetics but, where it counts, there are no compromises.  The maintenance standards we use meet or exceed the strict Transport Canada requirements and ensure that the aircraft are always safe to fly.  Our commitment to you is that, when you receive the keys to a plane you can expect that the plane is safe and airworthy for the intended flight.

Our fleet is made up of the venerable Cessna C-150 and C-172 models.  The C-150s are ideal training aircraft, simple yet very robust.  They can take a lot of abuse at the hands of student pilots and continue to perform well.  Most of the aircraft are older than the students and instructors flying them.  They got to be old by being a safe and reliable aircraft.  Over the next few years, we will be standardizing the fleet to have consistent avionics so that you can move from one C-150 to the next with ease..

Our C-172 are a mix of types and capabilities.  From the simplest standard aircraft to ones with complex avionics, the C-172s are stepping stones to more complex aircraft.  In time, we will add glass cockpit versions of these planes to the fleet.

We have two twin-engine Beech Duchess BE-76 aircraft that we use for multi-engine and multi-IFR training.  Together with our simulators, these aircraft are excellent trainers for these complex ratings.
