The night rating adds to your PPL license, giving you more proficiency, enjoyment and flexibility by allowing you to fly at night. It is also one of the building blocks to achieving a Commercial Pilot License and is included in the Commercial Pilot License program. Taken on its own, the Night Rating is non-vocational.

Before you can begin training for the Night Rating, you must have received a Private Pilot License.
If you are already enrolled in the Commercial Pilot License program or Professional Pilot Program, you do not need to enroll for the Night Rating as it is included in those programs.
To enroll in the Night Rating program, fill out a student application form.
A minimum of 20 hours of flight training is required, 10 of which must be night flying, 5 must be dual including a minimum of 2 hours of cross country time. 5 hours must be solo; this must include a minimum of 10 take-offs and landings. The remaining 10 hours must be dual instrument training; a minimum of 5 hours can be completed in the simulator. 5 hours of this can be obtained through your PPL training.
There is no practical or written test. However, students must demonstrate the necessary skill requirements to their instructor. Once this training is completed and your instructor is satisfied with your skill, they will state in your logbook “This
is to certify that the skill requirement for Night rating has been met.”
This will allow a Private Pilot License holder with a valid medical (Cat I or III) to legally fly at night.
There is no ground school component to this rating.
There is no formal graduation. The program is complete when your log book is certified as mentioned above. You will receive a certificate from the Ottawa Flight College for this rating. Each May, at the annual Wings Dinner, pilots who have received ratings and licenses during the year are celebrated.
