Multi-Engine Class Rating

The multi-engine class rating provides advanced training in a twin-engine aircraft and is a stepping stone to flying larger, more complex aircraft.

The Ottawa Flight College offers advanced training in multi-engine aircraft operations. The multi-engine class rating is a stepping stone to flying larger,
more complex aircraft in an airline or commercial operation.

With two twin-engine Beech Duchess BE-76 aircraft providing reliability and an advanced Precision Flight Controls simulator, the Ottawa Flight College
can support accelerated training for quick ratings and renewals. Our experienced instructors can provide complete training in a complex environment that will
build the student's confidence and capabilities. We also have a Transport Canada Flight Test Examiner on staff so that your training can culminate with a flight test without delay.
Graduates of the multi-engine program can also benefit by participating in one of the Ottawa Flying Club's long cross-country trips where the skills learned on the rating can really be put to use.

Located at the Ottawa International Airport, the Ottawa Flight College is easily accessible from downtown Ottawa with plenty of accommodation options nearby.
There is no need to travel to an out-of-the-way location to get your rating.

previous flight experience and proficiency. The training covers the following aspects of multi-engine aircraft and operations:

  1. Aeroplane Familiarization and Preparation for Flight
  2. Ancillary Controls/Operation of Aircraft Systems
  3. Taxiing
  4. Takeoff, Circuit and Landing
  5. Cruising Flight
  6. Engine Failure (Cruise Flight) and Manoeuvring with One Engine Inoperative
  7. Manoeuvring at Reduced Airspeed
  8. Stall (Clean Configuration)
  9. Approach to Stall (Landing Configuration)
  10. Steep Turn

  12. Intentional Engine Shutdown
  13. Arrival, Approach and Landing - One Engine Inoperative
  14. Emergency Procedures and Malfunctions

All of the flight test items required by the flight test report and described in the Flight Test Guide - Multi-Engine Class Rating - Aeroplane must be completed and the minimum pass mark for the Multi-Engine Class Rating flight test of 73 (70%) must be achieved.

Our professional instructors will be pleased to customize the training to your needs. As there is no scheduled ground school for this rating, the program can be run at a speed that suits the student. A competent pilot can complete the requirements in three days but a full week is a better estimate.

Ground School

There is no ground school component to the Multi-Engine Class Rating but some self-study is required.  A short written exam is given to assist students with the preparation for the flight test but this exam is not required as part of the Multi-Engine Class Rating.

Graduation

After a successful flight test, the student will have graduated from this program and will receive a certificate from the Ottawa Flight College.  Each May, at the Ottawa Flying Club's annual Wings Dinner, all the students who obtained certificates during the past 12 months are celebrated.
